Three Assumptions Based

Introduction : Assumption is something which is supposed or assumed and are taken for granted. It is based on the hypothesis that when something is said, the complete meaning or idea is not presented. There are many things which remain unsaid. In this situation, when we take something for granted or suppose something that aspect of our supposition is called assumption.

Given below is a list of tips to solve the statement and assumption questions:

  • Read the statement carefully with an approach that the assumptions would be true with regard to the statement
  • Analyse the information given and the assumption must only be made based on the information in the statement. Do not overcomplicate it
  • Common assumptions can always be followed but other than that do not align the statement with General Knowledge or other facts
  • Use the elimination method if you are unable to reach to the answer.
  • One thing to make a note of is that the assumption is something which the Author believes to be true so while choosing the correct option, keep this thought in mind as well. If any option contradicts the statement, then that assumption will not follow
  • Three Assumptions Based : This type also consists of similar type of questions as in type I, but with the difference that here three assumptions are given and the candidate is required to choose the group which is implicit in context of the given statement.

Direction : In the illustration given below a statement is given followed by three assumptions numbered I, II and III. An assumption is something supposed or taken for granted. You have to consider the statement and the assumptions that follow and decide which of the assumptions is implicit in the statement ?

Illustration 1 : Statement : If you desire to enjoy that best holidays to Europe, join our exclusive "EURO package", an advertisement of a travel agency in an Indian newspaper.

  • Assumption I. Many Indians travel to European countries to spend their holidays.
  • Assumption II. There are other travel agencies in India which organise holiday tours to Europe.
  • Assumption III. Many people may still travel to Europe through other travel agencies.
  • (a) I and III are implicit                   (b) I and II are implicit             (c) Only I is implicit                (d) All are implicit

Solution (b) : This advertisement is given as people travel to Europe through their package. There are other agencies also (clear from word ' our agency'). But III does not clarify that after this advertisement people may go to other agencies . Hence I and II are are implicit.

Direction : In this question, a statement is followed by three assumptions. Consider the statement and assumptions and decide which assumption (s) is/are implicit in the statement ?

    Illustration 2 :

Statement: Divya was advised by the Doctor that she should not take part in the dance competition

  • Assumption I: The Doctor did not want Divya to take part in the competition because he was afraid that she might lose
  • Assumption II: Divya had major surgery because of her injury
  • Assumption III: Divya did not have the money to go for the auditions
  • (a)  All Assumption I, II & III follow             (b)  Only Assumption I follows                (c)  Assumption II follows but Assumption I and III do not follow

    (d) None of the three assumptions follow

Solution (c) : Assumption II follows but Assumption I and III do not follow

Based on the statement given, the Doctor would only advice a patient to not do certain things if she/he is unwell, in this case surgery. Which is the only suitable assumption why the doctor would advise Divya to not take part in the dance competition.
